About this site

The Hagströmer Library is part of Karolinska Institutet and consists of over 150,000 books and journals connected to disciplines adjacent to the medical sciences. The main collection derives from Karolinska Institutet and the Swedish Medical Association (Svenska Läkareförbundet) and the collection specialises in material from the period 1600-1990. The mission of the library is to preserve the cultural heritage of Karolinska Institutet, and it is the core of the Medical History and Heritage unit (MHK) at Karolinska Institutet.

As a part of the Secrets to Patent project, we have digitised and processed the catalogue cards for the library’s main collection. Each card has been extracted from scanned volume pages, processed with OCR, and post-processed with to perform som basic cleaning and correction, such as extracting the top-corner of each card to make sure we got the catalogue code. All the original PDF-files are available on ALVIN, where they are published under a CC-00 license.

The digitization and processing and hosting of the catalogue has been done by Mathias Johansson, Cecilia Lundström, and Natacha Klein Käfer using Python, the VLM qwen3-vl:2b, Ollama, Quarto, GitHub Pages and Claude. Small random samples of the OCR output have been manually reviewed.
